MONUMENT VALLEY

I was quite disappointed in this one, I had something more spectacular in mind I guess. When you have already seen impressive rock formations, additional ones have to be exceptional to be exciting. I guess that is the downside of visiting a lot of famous sites in the same general area. Again I had to take most shots through the window of a moving car as here especially there were few places to pull off and stop. The sun was not in my favor so I have had to lighten a lot of the pictures to show the detail. As usual to just view the pictures in a larger slide show click on the first one.

This is the first rock you see when you are coming in from the West side. It is a very dark, almost black looking rock unlike the others that are quite red or brown red.

Merrick Butte Above

The West Mitten Butte above.

As you can see here, the sides of the road have no shoulders for parking on. There is quite a drop off the edge of the road and the soil was quite soft so that wasn't an option either.

Above.  Finally a pull off for one of the groupings of rocks. Most are single monuments strewn across the desert.

That is Camel Butte and King on His Throne in the distance.

Above
More of a silhouette  picture but I like how the road cuts a path to the rocks. You really can see for miles and miles.

This one has the erosion well under way and I love the patterns and colors in the eroded part.

Mexican Hat Rock above.

This one looks like Bell Rock in Sedona

All of a sudden this  one appeared, not sure of the story about it but I really like the colors and layers.

The last one on the highway in this direction. After this it was miles of empty desert.

!!!! You must be wondering how these got in here but after Monument Valley we stopped for the night at Cortez and tried this bright and happy family run Mexican restaurant .

The bar stools.
The table, if you can see it beneath the drinks and almost gone salsa , was as brightly decorated as the chairs. What a happy place.
The FOOD.......It was AMAZING !!

That plate was about 12 inches across at least and so delicious that I ate every bit, much to my discomfort but pleasure.

If you are ever in Cortez go to  the Fiesta Mexicana Restaurant and enjoy.
